Derek Nicholson's family is not new to the experience of college level ball. His father played for North Carolina and then was drafted by the New York Giants. As a result, Derek Nicholson grew up surrounded by football, and his natural abilities were enhanced by his dad's expertise.
Derek Nicholson hails from Winston-Salem, North Carolina and is a 2005 graduate of Mt. Tabor High School. On the Mt. Tabor football squad, Derek Nicholson finished his career with over 600 tackles, was a 4-star player, and was considered to be the number 30 overall player in the country.
As a true freshman in 2005, Derek Nicholson played in all 13 games, including an ACC playoff. He had 21 tackles, which was first among all first year players.
In 2006, Derek Nicholson played in 5 games and then was out due to a torn ACL.
Derek Nicholson came back strong for his 2007 season. He tied for 12th in the ACC for total tackles and averaged 7.6 tackles per game.
